EMERGENCY EDUCATION SYSTEM STRENGTHENING IN BAHR EL GHAZAL REGION

RACBO South Sudan is implementing the Emergency Education System Strengthening in Bahr El Ghazal region project in 2026, with funding support from UNESCO. The project was launched in March 2026 to strengthen the capacities of education officials to positively respond to education emergencies during and after crises.

Education remains one of the most urgent needs in emergency settings. When children are affected by conflict, displacement, poverty, climate shocks, or community instability, their learning is often interrupted. Schools may become overcrowded, teachers may lack enough support, and many children may be at risk of dropping out. For this reason, emergency education is not only about classrooms. It is about protection, hope, recovery, and the future of children.

Through this project, RACBO is working to support education structures in Bahr El Ghazal by promoting safer learning environments, strengthening coordination, engaging communities, and helping education officials, teachers, school leaders, and local actors respond more effectively before, during, and after emergencies.

The initiative also highlights the importance of prepared and capable education leadership. A strong emergency education response depends on officials who can plan, coordinate, assess needs, guide schools, mobilize communities, and support learners affected by crisis. When education officials are equipped with the right knowledge and skills, schools are better able to remain functional and children are more likely to continue learning.

One of the key messages of the project is that education in emergencies saves lives. It gives children safety, structure, knowledge, dignity, and a sense of normal life. It also helps reduce risks such as early marriage, child labour, exploitation, recruitment into violence, and long-term illiteracy.
